Success is not one face, but rather many. We may find it in the material prosperity achieved by a successful person, or we may see it in the scientific excellence he has achieved, or perhaps we find it in a literary work he has created, or it may appear in a professional contribution accumulated through his work over the years, or any other achievement, or any goal he aspired to and was able to achieve, and from which he obtained a material return or moral appreciation that led him to success. There is no doubt that every person wants to be successful in his life. There are many different factors for success that thinkers put forward, and researchers seek to study them to uncover a "recipe" for success that provides new knowledge that can benefit young people in directing their life path towards a bright future.
Some have proposed the effect of innate intelligence as a major factor in success. This intelligence is often expressed by the "Intelligence Quotient" scale, but there are those who disagree with the adoption of this scale, and set other measures to evaluate it, such as "multiple intelligences", or even to develop it, such as the "Growth Mindset". There are those who see "emotional intelligence", which can be learned and developed, as an important means of success. Then there are those who take into account the personal qualities of a person as major factors for success, and see that working on developing these qualities is necessary to activate success. Perhaps the most famous personal qualities circulated in this field are those known as the "Big Five Traits", and these qualities include: "Openness", "Conscientiousness", "Extraversion", "Agreeableness", and "Neuroticism".
In addition to the above, there are also those who link success to happiness, and consider that a successful person is the one who achieves happiness in life. There is no doubt, of course, that an important part of a person's happiness lies in the goals he achieves, and the accomplishments he makes that lead him to success, but there is another important part of happiness as well, which lies in social life, and the environment of love, affection and friendship that a person needs around him. There is no doubt that there are many other ideas on the subject of success, which every individual aspires to achieve in order to enjoy its material, moral, or both. We will pose - below - a question about the role of the trait of "grit" in success. This trait is distinguished by being required for every achievement, in any field, in order for its owner to achieve success. There is a survey study on this trait, conducted by a team of four researchers from three American universities, which included a large number of participants, and was published in 2007 in the "Journal of Personality and Social Psychology JPSP". This study found that "the trait of perseverance" is of great importance in success, along with other success factors. In particular, it revealed some agreement, in terms of the effect on success, between the trait of perseverance and the aforementioned Big Five personality traits, but it found no agreement, nor any contradiction, between “perseverance” and the level of innate intelligence assessed by the “IQ”.
The study provided a means of identifying people with the trait of "perseverance". This means was represented in two sets of test questions: one of which included "six positive cases confirming the trait of perseverance", and the other included "six negative cases that contradict this trait". The study adopted five levels to evaluate each case, whether negative or positive. Based on the evaluation of the cases and the collection of their results, the study determines the "level of perseverance" of those who answer the questions, provided that they answer them honestly and without doubt. Both the negative cases and the positive cases are repeated in different ways to document the trait of "perseverance" for each person subject to evaluation.
Positive cases included issues of: working hard, determination and diligence, completing the work that is started, working to achieve goals even if it takes a long time, facing difficulties without frustration, and the ability to overcome them. Negative cases included issues of: changing personal goals, changing the focus of interests every few months, or even from one year to the next, being influenced by new ideas and projects and neglecting previous ones, and difficulty in focusing on an idea or project for a long period, even if the focus reached an advanced level at the beginning.
The quality of "perseverance" is linked to, and even enhanced by, the quality of "passion" in the subject at hand. Passion in any subject comes from hobby and desire, and perhaps from compatibility with one's own capabilities. Perhaps this brings us back to the idea of the "element" presented in a book with this title, written by Ken Robinson. The idea says that every person has a specific field in which he excels, which is his "element", or the focus of the "talent" he possesses, and he enjoys working in this field; it is consistent with his capabilities and desires. Accordingly, "a person's perseverance in the field of his element becomes a passion" that enhances his giving and leads him to greater success.
What if we combined the different success factors together and developed a plan and curricula to develop them in the youth, across the different stages of education? The factor of "innate intelligence" and methods of working to improve it will give us a special intellectual distinction. The factor of "emotional intelligence" will provide us with sound behavior in work and dealing. The factor of "the big five personality traits" will give us social personalities capable of harmony and cooperation. The factor of "perseverance", and enhancing it by "discovering the element" and "passion" will provide us with the will to work, diligence in it, achievement and giving that we aspire to, and also to achieve "happiness" in life. This combination of different factors will give us a distinguished person qualified for success, contributing to development, activating its sustainability, and perhaps distinction as a role model for others to follow. In conclusion, it is perhaps necessary to point out that “morals” should be a starting point for perseverance in working to achieve the desired success. We are a nation that said: “I was sent only to perfect good morals.” It is also necessary to say that the success of individuals is a gift and a success for their societies. A successful person is distinguished by the superiority of his gift over his requirements.
